Chapter 1558 - 835: Invitation Letter
"Cease fire! Cease fire! The suspect is down! Everyone stay safe, approach and detain them."
"Everyone put on gloves before touching the evidence on the ground, do not contaminate the evidence."
"Call for an ambulance, call forensics, the surveillance team should come over with cameras to take photos."
Once Jimmy confirmed the three were incapacitated, he holstered his gun and took out his radio. While directing others to get to work, he informed the surveillance team to come help first. The agents didn't have cameras or similar equipment, and it was uncertain how long it would take for forensics to arrive, so the surveillance team had to temporarily fill in, to prevent the scene from being disturbed when the ambulance arrived to take people away.
But it was clear that he was overthinking it; preserving the details of the scene is usually more important in homicide cases. In this case, it wasn't necessary to focus too much on the details. As the agent processing the scene called him over, he felt assured when he saw the boxes on the ground.
Three boxes lay on the ground, two of the same design filled with cash. A quick glance revealed most were in 50 and 20 denominations. The other box contained bundles wrapped in brown paper. Even without opening them, it was obvious what they were.
In addition to the eight people from the three cars, there were five bodies on the ground. Whether they were double-crossed in a deal or attempting to rob another group during a transaction would have to be determined after interrogating the known survivors in the hospital. In any case, the surveillance team had complete video and information records, so they couldn't escape.
It was destined to be a sleepless night, yet Jimmy rejected Javier's request to rush back to the office overnight, telling him to take over the investigation with Mark during the day. As for Mark, he had to stay up with Jimmy.
The situation was quite clear. The organized crime unit didn't deploy frequently, so this was considered a major success. Despite the all-nighter, the spirits of the agents weren't too bad. The only issue was that the forensic center didn't have a forensic doctor on duty at night. It would take a long time to arrange the autopsies and receive the reports once they started their shifts during the day.
Early the next morning, before heading to bed, Jimmy contacted the federal judge to apply for a search warrant, leaving Javier and Mark to execute the daytime raid on the underground casino, while he went to rest.
Jimmy was uninterested in handling minor tasks; being in charge meant delegating some responsibilities and giving others a chance. Plus, Mark was new to the crime unit and needed to engage in more cases to get familiar with the investigative style. So he decided to stay up a bit longer, knowing a day off could be granted later.
Jimmy wasn't familiar with the historical case management style of the crime unit, but that wasn't a problem. It was already known that Javier was Ruiz's man, being a veteran in the unit he partnering with Mark in investigations was surely no issue. As for Jimmy, he didn't need to adapt to others' methods as long as they cooperated with him.
However, Jimmy's plan to sleep during the day was disrupted. Just after taking a shower and getting ready for bed, Ruiz called, "Jimmy, what happened? Ten dead, three critically injured. What did you guys do last night?"
Jimmy sighed, "An MS13 member showed unusual activity last night, and it was clear that something big was happening with several people moving together. After being notified by the surveillance team, we headed to the scene, and from the looks of it, it was black-on-black crime."
Ruiz paused before saying, "Come to my office after you wake up."
Jimmy: "Okay, see you in the afternoon."
Troublesome, Jimmy thought as he checked the time, realizing he still had four hours to sleep, which was sufficient.
When Ruiz saw Jimmy enter, he started right away, "You're too impulsive, Jimmy. We usually don't raid gang sites without proper preparation; it's too dangerous."
Jimmy shrugged and pulled a chair to sit opposite Ruiz, "There was a large-scale shootout at the scene; I couldn't just let them go. As for the danger, I felt the situation was manageable, especially since only four were left standing against our seven."
Ruiz tapped his knuckles on the table twice, "I'm not worried about you, you beast. I mean it's too dangerous for the others."
Jimmy: "Relax, with me on the scene, they're safe."
Ruiz: "You still don't get it. I'm talking about departmental operational protocols. You can't always go on missions with them; you're a Supervisory Special Agent now, you need to understand this. Management—you need to learn how to manage people, lots of people."
Jimmy's lips curled down; this truly was his weak point. Whether as a cop or an FBI agent, he had always been used to doing things himself. Even in operations, it was usually small-scale involving only a few people, and the number of personnel to manage rarely exceeded a handful. The crime unit's agents and support staff were somewhat overwhelming in number.
Ruiz also felt frustrated, as post-promotion Jimmy didn't seem any different from before. He hadn't grasped what he needed to focus on most now, "All our rules are aimed at maximizing safety for our people. Last night you should have stopped the operation; securing evidence could have waited until daytime even if we planned to act. We would have notified an SRT team. You have to remember that before you arrived, there were eight people on site; the few of you rushing into a gunfight was extremely risky."
